Nutrition Needs Before Pregnancy : Nutrition

The need for Vitamins and Minerals

Having a varied diet including all the key food groups: meat and protein foods, dairy or alternative calcium-rich foods, fruits and vegetables, and starchy foods (preferably wholegrain) provides a healthy balance to help control weight. Reduce the amounts of oils, fats and high calorie snacks you have in your diet, and cut down on alcohol too if you’re serious about controlling your weight. Using a diet intake/ weight loss app can help maintain your motivation. Diets that cut out whole food groups have a negative effect on your body as it’s not getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs to support a healthy pregnancy in the future.

“Avoid crash diets or restrictive diets as they deplete your body of minerals and vitamins,” says women’s health specialist dietitian Gaynor Bussell.
